How to Obtain a HIN

Learn more about how to obtain a HIN through the HIBCC portal

The HIN (Health Industry Number) is a unique and standardized identifier that enumerates hospitals, providers, suppliers, and all other partners doing business in the supply chain. It is the method used by your trading partners for identifying locations of services and activities at your facilities. In the 340B channel, HINs are used by most wholesalers to efficiently validate both the billing (covered) entity and the shipping location of a PHS order, whether that is an in-house or contract pharmacy.

Registering with HIBCC and obtaining a HIN number will help ensure access to 340B pricing for eligible products and locations. HIN numbers are unique to the combination of the billing entity and shipping (or dispensing) location and therefore must be created each time an entity registers a new in-house or contract pharmacy location.

More information about HINs can be found on the HIBCC website via an Apexus tutorial.

This article details the process for obtaining a HIN directly from HIBCC and was created in collaboration with the HIBCC user guides. To obtain a HIN, you must first complete the Request a New Account form within the myHIN portal on the HIBCC website.

HIN Registration Prerequisites

To register a HIN for a contract pharmacy you will first need to ensure:

  1. The contract pharmacy relationship is registered with HRSA.

  2. The pharmacy location is operational (open) or will be operational within 30 days of attempting to register.

Before registering a HIN for your contract pharmacy, contact your wholesaler as they may have already registered a HIN on your behalf, as is permissible under HIBCC guidelines. If the wholesaler has already registered a HIN for your contract pharmacy relationship, they can provide you with the HIN and you will not need to proceed with the HIN registration process.

Request a myHIN account

  1. Navigate to the HIBCC website and click Obtain Your HIN.

  2. Complete the requested fields.

  3. You will receive an email with a temporary password once the account has been approved. Every myHIN account request is subject to HIBCC approval.

  4. Utilize this temporary password to log in to your myHIN account.

  5. From your myHIN account, you will be able to manage existing HINs, submit HIN requests, update existing HINs, and pay invoices.

Request a new HIN

You can request a HIN from your myHIN portal. This is separate from updating an existing HIN. Requesting a new HIN would apply for any new locations or additional facilities.

  1. Log in to your myHIN account.

  2. Click Submit HIN Request from the main page.

  3. Select the Facility Type from the dropdown menu.

  4. If you are applying for a 340B HIN, you must answer ‘Yes’ and then enter the 340B ID. For help locating the 340B ID, review our article How to find a HRSA 340B ID.

For 340B HIN requests: the 340B ID is assigned to the Covered Entity. If you are requesting a 340B HIN for a Contract Pharmacy, then you will enter the 340B ID for the Covered Entity. All other fields will pertain to the Contract Pharmacy.

  5. Complete the remaining fields and continue to payment.

  6. Once submitted, your HIN request can take up to 8 weeks to complete.

  7. Once approved, you will be notified via email. Upon logging into your myHIN account, you can view the HIN by clicking View my HINs from the main page menu.
